Vale Alex
Alexandras Ellimanis Prokopavicius 1948 - 2009
Alex 'Proko' was a senior staff member at Slap Architects from 1983 to 2008 and was a man of considerable talent as a designer. Alex exhibited great skill in detail, as many who worked with him over the years have appreciated. A man of passion, he was consistent in his great and tenacious efforts towards improvement within himself, his associates and the practice.
He embraced technology and was instrumental in pulling Slap Architects into the digital age.
He always strove for simplicity in design and in many ways he was a minimalist. He differed from a pure minimalist in his use of colour - although like many in his profession he did like the shade of black. This mellowed to charcoal in recent years with a touch of red.
Alex had great skill in mentoring young people and was a very good teacher. He loved it when young students were in the office as he enjoyed their energy and challenging them.
He has left his mark on many significant buildings in our region and most obviously in the houses he designed for those lucky enough to experience his talent.
When he was diagnosed with cancer Alex's determination really showed through. He never gave up the fight and was convinced he would beat it. He didn't complain and there was never any doubt about his bravery.
We all miss him, his passion, his determination, his talent and most of all his challenging us to question and improve on a daily basis.
